The Reasons Behind the National Passport Continues to Drop in Worldwide Standing
Earlier this year, an online clip from an Indian travel influencer complaining about India's weak passport went viral on social media.
The influencer stated although neighbouring countries such as Bhutan and Sri Lanka were more welcoming of Indian tourists, securing travel permits to travel to most Western and European countries remained a challenge.
Such concerns regarding India's poor passport strength was reflected in the latest Henley Passport Index, which placed India in the 85th spot out of nearly two hundred nations, a decline of five positions than last year.
Officials in India has not commented regarding these findings so far.
Countries like Ghana, Rwanda and Azerbaijan despite smaller economic size compared to India β a nation that is the fifth-largest economy globally β are ranked higher on the index in the seventies range, respectively.
In fact, the country's position over the last ten years has hovered in the 80s, even dipping to the 90th spot in 2021. These rankings are dismal when measured against Asian nations like Singapore, Japan and South Korea, all maintaining leading ranks.
Global Passport Power Measures
Passport strength indicates a country's global influence and international standing. This leads to better mobility for its citizens, boosting business and educational prospects. A weak passport results in additional documentation, higher visa costs, fewer travel privileges and extended processing periods for travel.
But despite the decline in the rank, the number of countries offering visa-free access for Indian citizens has actually increased in the past decade or so.
As an instance, eight years ago β when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party assumed office β fifty-two nations offered visa-free access to Indians and its passport at seventy-sixth position in the ranking.
A year later, it fell to eighty-fifth place, then rose to 80th in 2023 and 2024, declining once more to the eighty-fifth spot this year. Meanwhile, countries allowing visa-free travel for Indians grew from 52 in 2015 to 60 in 2023 and 62 in 2024.
Increasing Worldwide Travel Competition
The number of nations allowing visa-free entry this year (fifty-seven) exceeds what it was eight years ago (52), but India's rank during both periods is 85. So, why is that?
Experts say that a major reason involves growing competition in international travel β indicating that nations are entering into additional travel agreements to benefit their citizens and economic growth. As per recent analysis, the worldwide mean count of countries travellers are able to access without visas has nearly doubled from fifty-eight nineteen years ago to one hundred nine currently.
For example, China has expanded its count of visa-free countries available to its citizens from 50 to 82 over the last ten years. Consequently, its position on the index has enhanced from 94th to 60th in that same duration.
In comparison, India β previously positioned at seventy-seventh place during summer β fell to eighty-fifth place in October following the loss of two nations.
Additional Factors Affecting Passport Strength
An ex-diplomat from India notes there are other factors influencing the strength of a country's passport, like economic and political conditions plus its receptiveness to accepting travelers from abroad.
For instance, the US passport has dropped out from the top ten currently holding the 12th position β a historic low β because of its more inward-looking approach in world politics.
The former ambassador recalls that during the seventies, Indian citizens had visa-free access to numerous European and Western nations, but that changed after the Sikh separatist movement during the eighties. Later political disturbances have further chipped away the country's reputation as a stable democracy.
"Many countries are also becoming increasingly wary regarding migrants," the diplomat added. "India has a high number of people migrating overseas or remaining beyond visa limits affecting the national image."
Factors like how secure a country's passport is and its immigration procedures also play a role to obtaining visa-free entry to other countries.
Security and Technological Improvements
India's passport faces ongoing security threats. In 2024, law enforcement arrested 203 people for suspected passport and visa irregularities. The country also has complex immigration processes and a slow pace of visa processing.
The former ambassador indicated that new technologies, such as the newly introduced digital passport or e-passport, may enhance safety and streamline immigration. The e-passport contains a microchip holding biometric information, making it harder to forge or tamper with the passport.
But, increased diplomatic efforts and travel partnerships continue essential to boosting international travel freedom of Indians and consequently, India's passport ranking.
