Major Online Outage Affects Numerous Sites and Apps

A large-scale internet disruption has affected many online platforms and mobile apps globally, and users noting problems getting online due to difficulties at Amazon’s web hosting system.

The affected services include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-owned platforms including its primary shopping site and the Ring device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected as well as its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Also in the UK, many Ring users turned to networks to state their security devices were not working.

Just within Britain, notifications of issues on individual apps ran into the thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the east coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a unit that supplies essential internet infrastructure for numerous firms, who rent out resources on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting system.

The cascading impact seemed to hit services around the world, and the outage tracking website indicating outages with the same sites in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on the start of the week, including several cases situated in the Virginia area, the site of the eastern US data center where the company stated the problems started.
