The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Scale and Features

Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of facilities:

  • Five hotels
  • More than 20 dining and drinking venues
  • 20 retail outlets
  • An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
  • A boat marina and a commercial airport

The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.

Historical Context at Ownership

The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
