Synthetic pictures claiming to show Nicolás Maduro in custody after his apprehension by the US have gained countless of impressions across the internet.

How AI Images of the President Appeared Within Hours

The first fabricated synthetic picture apparently displaying him led off a plane circulated shortly after. The graphic was unpublished by any official US channels; it was instead posted on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Our analysis used the SynthID tool, determining the picture was produced or modified with Google AI.

More AI-generated images began to spread in the subsequent period, appearing to show different views of the leader under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures show they were posted by an Instagram account named ultravfx.

The detection tool says the further pictures were likewise produced using AI technology.

Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump posted the first real photo of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after this confirmation was released, AI-generated pictures continued to spread but were modified to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Online investigation show these updated fakes were originally uploaded on TikTok by a graphic design account. Similarly, analysis found these subsequent pictures were produced with AI tools.
